Detailed Component Guide for Sinotruk Howo FRONT AXLE

Front axle (7T/9T)

The Front Axle is the main structural I-beam supporting the front end. The 7-ton variant suits standard highway use, while the 9-ton version is for heavy construction and mining. It is forged from micro-alloyed steel for maximum impact resistance.

Knuckle pin

The Knuckle Pin serves as the kingpin pivot. Hardened and precision-ground, it allows smooth wheel turning while supporting all vertical loads. It is protected by a replaceable bushing to extend service life.

Left knuckle / Right knuckle

These steering knuckles are mirror-image forgings that connect the wheel hub to the axle beam. They house the wheel bearings and provide mounting points for brake calipers or drums, ensuring accurate wheel geometry.

Stud

Studs are threaded rods pressed into components like the knuckle or hub. They provide strong, wear-resistant fastening points for brake assembly and securing the wheel to the hub.

Bushing

Bronze or steel-backed bushings reduce friction in the steering linkage. They are press-fit into components like the tie rod arms and steering knuckle arms, providing low-maintenance operation.

Steering knuckle Arm

The Steering Knuckle Arm transfers linear motion from the tie rod to the knuckle. Forged from alloy steel, it is precisely machined to maintain correct Ackermann steering geometry.

Nut fastener

These self-locking nuts feature a nylon insert that prevents loosening from vibration. They are used on critical steering linkages, ball joints, and tie rod ends for enhanced safety.

Bearing (Thrust roller bearing)

The Thrust Roller Bearing supports vertical loads between the axle beam and steering knuckle. It ensures smooth steering even under heavy front-axle loads, reducing driver fatigue.

Tie Rod Arm (left/right)

The Tie Rod Arms connect the drag link to the steering knuckles. The left and right arms are designed with perfect symmetry to maintain parallel steering geometry during cornering.

Brake shoe pin

The Brake Shoe Pin anchors the brake shoes to the backing plate or caliper. It provides a fixed pivot point, allowing the shoes to expand evenly against the brake drum or disc.

Castle Nut

The Castle Nut (slotted hex nut) secures the knuckle pin or tie rod ends. Used with a cotter pin, it provides a positive mechanical lock that prevents any rotation or loosening.

Cotter pin

Cotter pins are split pins that secure castle nuts. After installation, the legs are bent around the nut to prevent it from backing off due to vibration.

Bracket (left/right)

Mounting brackets attach the front axle assembly to the chassis frame or suspension components. They are fabricated from heavy-gauge steel with precision-drilled mounting holes.

Complex bushing

The Complex Bushing is a self-lubricating bearing that requires no regular greasing. It is used in high-load pivot points where standard bushings wear quickly.

Shim (S=2.2mm to 2.8mm)

Shims are thin steel plates used to adjust bearing preload and axle alignment. Available in thicknesses from 2.2mm to 2.8mm in 0.1mm increments for precise adjustment.

O-ring

O-rings provide oil sealing between components. Made from heat-resistant rubber, they prevent lubricant leakage and keep contaminants out of bearings and joints.

Grease fitting

The Grease Fitting (grease nipple) allows easy lubrication of pivot points. It includes a spring-loaded check valve to prevent dirt ingress and grease backflow.

Adjusting bolt

The Adjusting Bolt sets the bearing preload on the steering knuckle. It is paired with a locknut to maintain precise adjustment after service.

Front hub

The Front Hub carries the wheel and brake drum or disc. It is cast from high-strength iron and houses tapered roller bearings for smooth wheel rotation.

Cap

The Cap seals the end of the hub, protecting the bearings from dirt and moisture. It is pressed into place and can be removed for bearing service.

Spacers (Circlip for hole)

These internal retaining rings hold components like bearings in place within the hub. They are spring-tempered for flexibility and high retention force.

Wheel bolt

Wheel bolts are high-strength studs pressed into the hub. They provide reliable attachment for road wheels and are designed to withstand repeated tightening cycles.

Cap screw (Hex head bolt)

Hex head cap screws are used for general assembly throughout the axle. Their high-strength rating ensures reliable clamping without loosening under vibration.

Spring shim (Spring washer)

Spring washers prevent bolt loosening by maintaining tension. Their split design creates a spring force that resists vibration and thermal cycling.

Bearing (Tapered roller 32314/32310)

Tapered roller bearings support the wheel hub, handling both radial and axial loads. The 32314 is used on the inner side, while 32310 is used on the outer side.

Spacers (Separator ring)

Separator rings (spacers) maintain correct distance between tapered roller bearings. They ensure proper bearing preload and prevent axial movement.

Seal (Shaft seal)

The shaft seal prevents lubricant leakage from the hub. Its spring-loaded lip maintains constant contact with the shaft surface for a perfect seal.

Pin (Cylindrical pin)

Cylindrical pins are used for alignment and positioning during assembly. Hardened for wear resistance, they ensure accurate alignment of mating components.

Washer

Flat washers distribute bolt load over a wider area, protecting the underlying material from damage during tightening and preventing embedding.

Knuckle lock nut

The Knuckle Lock Nut secures the knuckle to the axle beam. Precision-threaded, it maintains correct bearing preload after adjustment.

Cover / Egis Cover

Protective covers shield components from debris. The Egis Cover (rubber boot) protects tie rod ends or ball joints from dirt and moisture ingress.

Plaque (Nameplate)

The Nameplate provides identification for the axle assembly, including model numbers, serial numbers, and specifications for maintenance reference.

Annulus ring (ABS ring)

The Annulus Ring (tone ring) works with the ABS sensor. As it rotates, the sensor reads its teeth to generate wheel speed signals for brake control.
